Tatreez Brooch | Evergreen & Papaya | Snapdragon

This is the centrepiece of the collection. A single brooch in 925 sterling silver with a gold finish, carrying a full panel of hand-beaded Tatreez down its length. It is the most considered piece I make, and it is priced accordingly.

The motif is Tum Al Samakeh — Arabic for Snapdragon. It's a flower motif from Ramallah, worked here in a 13 × 30 grid of Miyuki Delica beads. The beads are stitched one by one using square stitch, so the panel holds its shape and sits flat against the pin.

The form is a safety pin, reworked as a brooch. Around the edge, 23 gold Miyuki seed beads soften the outline. They give the panel a rounded border instead of a hard line, so the shape doesn't look cut off at the edges.

The beadwork is stitched directly onto the pin and fixed in place at the top. The lower end hangs free, so the panel moves slightly with the pin rather than sitting rigid against it.

The colour palette blends evergreen, pale turquoise, rose and papaya orange. Cool and warm together. The turquoise and rose soften it, the papaya lifts it.

This is a piece made to be worn where people can see it. On a coat lapel, where the gold finish catches the light. At the top button of a shirt, as a single point of colour. On a scarf, holding the fold. On a denim jacket, against the seams. It anchors an outfit rather than finishing it.
