Esdud, a Palestinian village situated in the southern coastal region of historic Palestine, was once a thriving community strategically positioned along the Mediterranean coast. With a population of 4,910 in 1945, according to the 'Village Statistics, 1945' report, Esdud was a bustling hub of life and agriculture. Its fertile lands spanned 47,871 dunams, nurturing banana cultivation, cereal crops, and plantations.
However, Esdud's story, like so many Palestinian villages, took a tragic turn during the Nakba in 1948. The term "Nakba," meaning "catastrophe" in Arabic, signifies the forced displacement of Palestinians from their homes and lands. Esdud was no exception. Its residents were uprooted, and two Israeli settlements were later established east of the village. The city of Ashdod was constructed to its north, further erasing the presence of Esdud on the map.
Preserving Esdud’s Heritage Through Tatreez
Despite the displacement and loss, the cultural legacy of Esdud endures, woven into the intricate threads of Tatreez embroidery. Tatreez, the traditional Palestinian cross-stitch, serves as both an art form and a historical record, preserving the essence of Palestinian heritage.
In my Winter Collection 2024, I was honored to feature three Tatreez patterns inspired by Esdud. These patterns pay homage to the village’s history and celebrate its cultural richness. They are more than just designs—they are stories, memories, and symbols of resilience.

Each Tatreez pattern in this collection serves as a reminder of Esdud’s significance, ensuring that its legacy is not forgotten. These designs reflect the spirit of the village and its people, encapsulating the beauty, pride, and strength of a heritage that refuses to fade.
