Gold Jewellery: Types and Care Tips

Gold Jewellery: Types and Care Tips

No matter the piece or the price, we all want to get the most out of our jewellery. As a big proponent of slow fashion, I'm here to share some information about the different types of gold jewellery I have in my Palestinian Tatreez-inspired beaded collection and how to care for them.

Let me start with the two different types of gold I offer at Asherah Jewellery: gold-plated and gold-filled.

Gold Plated: Gold-plated items have a layer of gold applied to a base metal, such as copper, brass, or silver. The gold is dipped over the outside of the base, and there is no gold inside the piece. The weave endings of my pieces, which are connected to the first row of beads, are made of gold-plated brass. They are lead-free, cadmium-free, and nickel-free, ensuring your comfort and safety.

Gold Filled: Gold-filled items, on the other hand, have around 100% more gold than gold-plated items and are more tarnish resistant. The gold is present throughout the entire piece, not just as an outside coating. Gold-filled jewellery is a great and affordable alternative to solid gold, and with proper care, it can last a lifetime. Apart from the weave endings, all the findings that are gold in colour, such as the extension chains, lobster clasps, and jump rings, are gold-filled.

When it comes to caring for your jewellery, it's important to note that although gold-filled is water-resistant, it's still best to avoid exposing it to excessive water. While showering or applying lotion, the chemicals present in soap and shampoo may harm the delicate glass beads and oxidize the gold-plated weave endings.

To ensure the longevity of your pieces, I recommend removing them before showering, swimming, or engaging in physical activities like sports or cleaning. By giving your jewellery the care it deserves, you can enjoy its beauty for years to come.

Choose your pieces wisely, care for them thoughtfully, and let the timeless elegance of gold jewellery accompany you on your style journey.
